At this meeting we will be reflecting on the year, celebrating our achievements with some Christmas cheer and reviewing some of the tools presented at the recently held national conference in Sydney.

The tools to be reviewed include the Take 16 Portable Personality Type Kit, developed in NZ by Sharon Fulton Bevers and Megan Smith of typeconnect and the Four Interaction Styles and Four Temperaments cards developed by Linda Berens.

WA TALKING TYPE COFFEE MEETING – EAST PERTH

Date: 15 August, 2009
Venue: Toast café Claisebrook

On 15 August our scheduled meeting of Walking Talking Type tool place at 10.00am in the fresh air at Toasts Café in Claisebrook. Although the weather forecast suggested storms we were surprised to enjoy favourable conditions.

Four of us accepted the challenge of the wintry forecast. Our two and a half hours chat seemed to fly; the experience was comfortable, respectful, supportive and generous in what was shared. The following snippets were some points of interest.

Our day’s subject was myth busting stereotypes and first step was a quick personal background check so as to be clear about the language used in discussion depending upon whether we’d been trained in Myers Briggs or Interstrength. The idea of Interstrength as being holistic approach including cognitive dynamics, temperament and interactive styles was explained. As a tool it was seen to be efficient and able to assist individuals to “come home to core self as it were after pursuing facets of self and otherness through a layered approach – to be pursued later.”

One member spoke of a playful attitude to type which she and a friend had adopted whilst holidaying; they decided to be totally “other” and pose a princesses for a day. Interestingly even in this “performance” role they found themselves being true to type in the day’s preparation. One had a precisely planned and orderly approach to dressing while the other was somewhat lacking in that regard. Were they type opposites? That remained a mystery.

The third member of the holiday group caused the other two to examine their individual capacities for empathy as she chose that holiday to break an ankle! From that point we began to discuss differing type – related styles of demonstrating empathy concluding that not one was more correct than another rather each was simply a typical approach in particular context.

It was suggested that in any situation where one was cast in the role of helper/ advisor it could be prudent to enquire exactly what the function the other party wished one to perform, be it a sympathetic, critical or listening ear or perhaps that of practical assistant advisor. To achieve such an end the desirability of a common language tool was underlined. This common thread could be type or another source familiar to both parties ie “Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus” was cited.

We looked at Linda Berens Temperament model and endeavoured to determine by describing strengths of the four groups just where our own inclinations to stereotyping might be likely to occur. It was acknowledged that one could assume aspects of the four temperament groups in a particular context where it was needed, especially in a work related environment, but that when eg in a prolonged ‘S” task was performed by an “N” there would be a distinct relief at returning to ones own “home base” of type.

Again on the work scene the notion of assembling representatives of the four temperaments to brainstorm ideas and follow through with planning fir implementation was envisioned as a possibility. The behind the scenes catalysts sis not relish the thought of being put on the spot as a source of ideas. They would feel more comfortable when free of expectations. The merits of the idea were seen to be sound in general especially as workers not normally seen to be up front in a particular work environment could perhaps from a temperament perspective make a valued contribution otherwise likely to be lost to the organisation.

Inter type/ temperaments conflicts occurring in different contexts and a need for conflict resolution strategies were touched on briefly to be explored at a following session.

In conclusion there was general agreement that not one person was exempt from the pitfalls of stereotyping and that in our group meetings we would endeavour to be aware of that fact and gently inform and educate each other.

A Discussion on Temperament

The meeting was attended by 9 WA Type Talkers and was very successful in getting some lively discussion on temperament.

The evening started with Helen Carter giving some background to the group and upcoming events. The next meeting will have a guest speaker.

Helen talked about AusAPT and although it is not essential for members of the WA Talking Type Group to be members there are some great benefits, such as workshops that are only available to members, such as the upcoming revision workshop on cognitive processes, members only teleconferences and the bi-monthly journals. Helen also mentioned that next year there will be a Symposium in Sydney.

The group discussed the running of the WA Talking Type Group. Helen Carter is the President, Helen Allison the Treasurer, Deanna Heal volunteered to be responsible for marketing and Rhondda, Grainne and André are the synergy group responsible for organising agenda items. There will be a meeting following the next group meeting to discuss how the group will operate.

The group took turns in introducing themselves and their best experience and there was a marked difference in the way that the different types presented their event and the way they visualised it and brought it to reality for those around them; a mixture of abstract and concrete language.

The discussion took the form of a panel which was made up of Pat (NF – Catalyst) Valentina (SJ – Stabiliser) Rhondda (NT – Theorist) Helen Allison (SP – Improvisor).

Helen placed 3 objects on the table in front of the panel: a pashmena, mobile phone and coffee cup. Each of the temperaments was asked to tell the group about them. There was a lively discussion as regards the connections made and language used to describe the 3 objects. The Theorist used very precise language, compared for example, with the Catalyst who saw a connection to relationships and people and described the objects in a very colourful and abstract way.

They were then given a scenario where the panellists were asked how they might react to the given situation – again the temperaments showed themselves in the core values and needs of each of the temperament types.

There was also discussion about books that members have found interesting. Some had read and used You've Got Personality for facilitation of workshops and Scott and Grainne talked about the older, yet still popular book, Please Understand Me by David Kiersey.

The group started to discuss a logo for the group and what is should represent. The catalysts amongst us felt that it should be meaningful and symbolic of who we were and other types answered with “Who cares….it’s just a logo.”

The next meeting will be held on Saturday 15^th venue to be confirmed.

WA news heats up

The first new era meeting for WA Talking Types took place yesterday, Saturday 20 June at the Matilda Bay Cafe. The meeting was attended by six WA type-talkers including four who had attended the training at ECU in November 2008.

Helen Carter opened up with discussions on what the group would want from these meetings and it was agreed that we would like the opportunity to share our experiences and knowledge, hear from practitioners in the field and meet up with like-minded people on a regular basis to talk type.

We then had a lively discussion on how we had planned our journey to the meeting, which ranged from detailed itineraries on whereis.com, to taking the most pleasant route and falling back on previous experiences to guide us to the final destination. It was an insightful discussion and amusing debate on type.

The group agreed to meet the 3rd Thursday evening of the month, then the 3rd Saturday morning of the following month. The next meeting will be:
16 July at 6pm at Unit 6, Level 2, 20 Kings Park Road, Perth and will be looking at four types and how they might react to a given set of circumstances. The panel will be made up of four different types from the group. This will give us an opportunity to look at different reactions, core needs, values and type differences in action.

Our local rep on the National AusAPT council, Helen Carter, is on the move again.

Recently she let us know about Anne Russells' return visit to WA to deliver Interstrength Training. Well, with 12 people attending the four day training at ECU this week - November 25-28 - that could be considered more than enough activity for the far flung. But no, there's more.

Co facilitating the training with Anne is Dan Foster, secretary of the National Aust APT committee.Anne and Dan have agreed to attend a meeting of the WA Talking Type community on Friday night, November 28th, to discuss the strengths of using mutliple models for clarifying type preference.

This writer is still in the very deepest south of Western Australia, but Ric Taylor is onto things and has pointed out that my inability to relate to numbers shows.
Indeed, the majority of votes cast in the recent ballot preferred a national structure.
Given my preferences are ENF and P, I have no excuses.
The breakdown below should have been clear to me and I should have retained the info. I retained something, but Ric suggests, and he's right, that it certainly wasn't the numerical facts.

The votes have been counted. It's all over and we have a new national council.
Thanks must go to the outgoing councillors for their contributions to AusAPT and may they remain in the fold.
Joining the new team will be a new WA representative, Helen Carter. Your old and short-term rep was this blogger, Jon Doust. He didn't last long because he was always on the move, from Perth to Albany and it was decided best for the vast-state to have its Nat Rep living in the city.
A positive and fully functioning AusAPT has a lot to offer its members, in particular a magazine worth a permanent space on your research shelf and bi-annual national conference.
But times have been tough and maybe it's time to rephrase an old question: ask not what can your association do for you, but what can you do for your association.
The numerical breakdown of the votes is not available at the time of writing (on my Perth computer and I'm writing this in Albany; it's what happens when you shift in bits and pieces), but, from memory, most votes were cast for a return to state branches. However, the majority of votes cast did not reach the required percentage necessary for such a change to take place.
So, here we go.
Could be a bumpy ride.
Let's give it a shot.
Offer all the help we can.
And make sure the next national conference kicks.

What’s it all about?

Helen Carter is the new WA president of our AusAPT chapter. This is her first contribution to this blog. It will not be her last.

“I don’t know how to love him” is a lament from that well known rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar where we hear of the despair of not knowing how to love another. He was just a man after all and she had known many men before – this one was different? I question - what type was she – what type was he? This may have helped.

What’s understanding type all about?

To some, it is just another tool that lines up with many other tools to be pulled out and used when needed, and delivered to others for whatever purpose they may desire.

For others it may provide a much needed process for deep exploration of self to better understand past experiences and their impact on the present and the future.

Is it too simplistic to think that it could be about understanding ourselves in order that we may understand others? And could it also be more about understanding others so that we can build more positive and effective relationships with the other people with whom we live, love and work? Building better relationships to enable us to collectively learn and achieve more – sounds good to me - or am I just blinded by my type- INFP?

Understanding and meeting other peoples needs so that we may meet our own, communicating in a ways that others can hear, accessing then valuing difference as an asset and strength that adds to our understanding of ourselves, striving to build vibrant, effective relationships can all be strengthened by truly understanding and valuing all types as well as our own.

However we also need to transfer this knowledge into practical skills if we, as a type association, are to have any credibility in the use of type to build positive personal and work based relationships. It is too easy to keep the stamp boldly on our forehead and act out of a known box. So, how do we develop the skills to move out of what is so familiar?

The type association provides the opportunity to explore and learn about self and others type behaviours, and to develop the skill in using type effectively to build stronger relationships that ultimately benefit the users and receivers of training in type.

This requires that the association models the strong leadership required to promote learning, to enable the skills for using type in a positive and vibrant way to be developed and to promote the ongoing use of type to build effective relationships and workplaces for its members.

So “what’s it all about” …… for you?

MEMBERS’ BALLOT

State Structure or National Structure?

Background Information

In the June 2008 Newsletter, I informed members of the situation that has been confronting AusAPT for at least the last six years. The issues to which I am referring include continuously declining membership numbers, and hence declining income and the general reluctance of members with respect to serving on National and State Councils and attending Branch meetings, activities and conferences. Moreover, we are budgeting for a deficit budget for the year 2008/09. This year, for the first time since we have been incorporated, we had to cancel the biennial, National Conference because there was a lack of interest and/or resources to organise and manage the not inconsiderable effort required to present such an activity.

National Councillors, as Directors of the Association, decided at their last meeting to give all AusAPT financial members the opportunity to vote on the future structure of AusAPT. The circumstances precipitating this decision have been outlined in the June Newsletter. It is the majority view of National Councillors that the Association should restructure as state-based associations, incorporated in their respective States. In other words, each State Branch would incorporate as a separate association, with its own Branch Council, consisting of a President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer, plus other Councillors if required. Although the state associations would be autonomous and independent, the National interests of AusAPT would be preserved by a collegiate comprised of the State Presidents meeting on an ad hoc basis to address matters of mutual interest, eg the Website, the Type Review, Newsletter, Biennial National Conference.

State associations would issue membership renewals and receive the total membership subscriptions, instead of the current policy under the National structure where the total funds from renewals are remitted to the National account. Because of the cost structure of maintaining the existing National structure, it has not always been possible in recent years to re-distribute a percentage of these funds to State Branches, which occurred in 2007 and is the case for 2008. This would not be the case with state-based associations where members’ subscriptions would remain within the State. It is the considered opinion of the majority of National Councillors that this state-based structure is the most appropriate way to restructure the organisation, to preserve a viable and continuing AusAPT presence in Australia, albeit as self-funded State associations.

Since the distribution of the last Newsletter to members, there has been much discussion amongst the membership about the pros and cons of the proposal presented above. Not surprisingly, given the differences of preferences within this Type community, there are members who do not agree with the proposition outlined above, and it is entirely their democratic right to do so. However, please keep in mind that it is also the National Councillors’ legal responsibility to put before the members, the situation as they see it from a Directors’ perspective. This has brought us to this position where the matter must be presented to the members to decide what they think is best for the Association, ie independent state-based associations or retention of the current National structure.

The members who are not persuaded to the proposition of state-based associations have discussed how they may preserve the current AusAPT National structure. To that end, they have proposed an interim National Council to oversee the organisation, until such time as their election/appointment may be confirmed at the 2008 Annual General Meeting which must be held between July 01 and December 31, 2008. However, no such appointments may occur unless and until the present incumbents of these positions resign or retire, as their terms of office do not expire formally until December 31, 2008. Assuming these resignations occur, the remaining National Councillors (the State Presidents) would need to endorse the nominations for casual vacancies. Therefore, to give effect to the retention of the AusAPT National structure, the proposed new National Council would comprise the following office bearers:-

§ President – Philip Kerr, (INTP), Queensland

§ Vice President – Ivana Crestani, (ENTP), New South Wales/ACT

§ Secretary – Daniel Foster, (INFP), Queensland

§ Treasurer – Ric Taylor, (INFJ), New South Wales/ACT

§ Public Officer – Mary McGuiness, (ENFP), New South Wales/ACT

What to Do?

Members of AusAPT have a clear choice between the two options presented in this preamble and you are asked to make a decision one way or the other on the ballot paper attached to this communication. If you are attracted to the proposition advocated by the National Council for state-based associations, you will place a cross (X) in the box alongside the relevant statement. Alternatively, if you are attracted to the proposition to retain the National structure with the listed candidates for office bearer positions, you will place a cross (X) alongside that statement. Attached are two envelopes, along with a ballot paper. One of the envelopes is stamped and addressed and you are requested to record your name and address on the back of that envelope. Would you complete the ballot paper and put it in the unmarked envelope and place that envelope in the stamped addressed envelope to be posted to the Returning Officer, ie Office Logistics, by July 25, 2008. You are encouraged to give this matter your serious consideration for the continuing presence of AusAPT in Australia.

Let’s keep our national association!

The Australian Association for Psychological Type Inc was
formed in 1991 as a national forum for users of psychological
type. Over its 17 years, AusAPT has hosted eight national
conferences and a multitude of regional events, published a
highly-regarded periodical, and built up a national database
of type research. Moreover, AusAPT offers a national network
of type professionals, with strong international links.

In common with many fellow members of the Australian type
community, we believe that our best interests will be served
by maintaining a viable national association.

We don’t underestimate the challenges of running a not-for-
profit organisation on volunteer effort, and we acknowledge
the good work of the former and current office bearers. But
we don’t believe that splitting up our national association into
several parts is an answer. That will compound the difficulty
of filling honorary leadership roles, and multiply the costs of
complying with the laws of several different States.

The negotiation by disparate State-based associations of the
funding and delivery of key national benefits (such as a web
site, conferences, publications and type research) will add an
extra layer of overheads, and impose additional demands on
the time of the leaders of the various associations. Splitting
up AusAPT in a number of State-based associations will:

• dissipate our resources across many small organisations;
• duplicate our administration and governance; and
• diminish our links with the international type community.

Member numbers have fallen in recent years, but the decline
is not fatal. The British and New Zealand type associations
have operated for many years with numbers in the range of
AusAPT’s current membership. The fixed costs of running an
incorporated association demand a critical mass, which we
would lose if AusAPT were to be split up. A unified national
organisation will continue to serve as an efficient mean of
collecting fees and keeping statutory accounts and records.

To keep AusAPT on track, we need to boost our income and
contain our expenses. The transitional leadership nominees
have strong links to a number of suppliers of type materials
and training, who are willing to mail out promotional material
to their lists of several thousand Australian type practitioners
who are currently not AusAPT members—fertile ground for
attracting new members and lifting subscription income.

On the cost side, we’ll continue the work of the current team
in utilising new technologies—such as emailing newsletters,
consulting members by email about their individual needs,
and offering web-based teleconferencing for professional
development. We’ll also look at streamlining conferencing
arrangements for AusAPT’s national committee.

AusAPT member for over 7 years, and a keen participant
at two national conferences. Ric has regularly presented
and used type in organisations. His early career included

Regional Services, and an IT company. This has given
Ric a strong understanding of the human and financial
imperatives which sustain and develop organisations.

Mary was a founding member of AusAPT and served on
the national committee for eight years, with two years as
national president. She was involved in the incorporation
of AusAPT and the development of its constitution and

A few weeks ago a number of us gathered around at Ingrid's house and listened to and chatted with Kay Hennessy. The evening was informative, people made new connections and someone asked: "Why don't we do this more often?"
It is because, of course, our lives are too full, but we will do it again and the news will break, before it happens, on this blog.

BIG NEWS
If you get the Australian Psychological Type Review and read the letters from our national president you will know our national body is in a parlous state.
Earlier in the year at a gathering of federal councillors we all decided to do our best to redress matters and that if we failed then probably the best solution was to revert to state bodies.
The matter has come to a head.
Soon you will be asked to vote, for AusAPT to be restructured as state based incorporated associations,, or for it to continue as a national structure.
There are positions for both sides. Over the next couple of weeks, your blog-master will place the positions on this blog.
It is an important vote.
Study the positions, talk to friends, make comments on this blog, remember your personal position may be related to your type, respect the types not of your type that may hold other positions related to their type.

It has been prepared by Helen Allison, a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Murdoch University and a researcher into complex systems.

Psychological types in Australian Natural Resource Management: one reason why systemic approaches are not adopted?

Abstract

In the past two decades natural resource management across rural Australia has increasingly come under the influence of regional groups, such as Catchment Management Authorities, as well as direct government intervention (regulation) and the normal impact of the market.

We hypothesise that the psychological composition of such groups and other decision-makers may have a significant effect on their decision-making, and that membership of management groups may preferentially select for certain psychological types that affect their capacity to respond to complex decisions in a rapidly changing world.
This paper uses the well-established Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI®) to assess the distribution of personality types, and found that there was a marked preponderance of both males and females in the ISTJ, ESTJ and ENTJ categories, and that the overall composition of the groups sampled was strongly weighted to sensate (S), thinking (T) and judgmental (J) preferences with no significant difference between the proportional distribution of types among males and females.
The distribution of preference types was markedly different from that of the large base population used for comparison. The results are consistent with earlier studies that found a high proportion of introversion (I), thinking (T) and judging (J) among both Australian farmers and those in senior management positions.
We postulate that a wider range of both preference and personality types within the composition of NRM decision-making groups would increase their flexibility and adaptability in responding to the rapidly changing complex problems they must deal with.

WA gets off its thing!

It is not all happening, but something is.
Recently three members of the State executive met and talked.
The three were: Jon Doust (President), Helen Carter (Secretary) Helen Allison (Treasurer), Lisa Flynn (committee member).
It went well. There were no awkward moments. All agreed the only way a local branch, or chapter, would survive was if we made an effort.
This blog is a start.
In the top right hand corner you will find a link to sign up, post your email address, and every time an article is posted, you will get it via email.
Simple.
Articles, interesting and informative, will be posted. And the executive will also keep you posted on what is coming up, who is coming in and what is going on.
To the best of our ability.
Now, back to the meeting.

First item on the agenda was a report from Jon Doust following a meeting he attended of the National Executive. A summary follows.

The National Executive meeting reported a drop in membership in all states and, based on projected figures, if not urgently addressed will, result in a net loss to the association. Immediate steps need to be taken and this includes;

- No budget being allocated for the annual conference this year however planning will be undertaken for a National seminar. There are significant cost savings in this type of event.

- Jon Doust suggested the setting up of a National and State blog called “Talking Type” with each state being responsible for setting up their own blog. In WA, Jon will administer the blog and will add relevant information from other states onto the blog. The purpose of the blog was to facilitate communication between members and increase access of members to type information, updates, articles etc. This may result in increase in member ship through states activity providing more relevant and timely information and contact. This was accepted by the meeting.

Mr Barry O’Sullivan facilitated the meeting and provided information and useful tools including an action/reaction model and leadership in time management. Jon will write these up and place on the WA blog.

The WA meeting supported the suggestion to set up a WA Blog and to ensure an ongoing and vibrant blog is maintained we agreed that a variety of articles was required as a backlog and that Jon place these on the blog at intervals to ensure a fresh supply of information is provided to stimulate interest and to engage those accessing the site.
All members of the WA Executive agreed to write articles to appear on the blog.

Well, this is it, the blog.
And the blog master is Jon Doust.
He will post often, in his particular way, because the way, to him, is important. He has an artistic temperament and his full profile reads like this: Extraverted iNtuitive, Feeling Perceiver.

Within the next few days, following a vote taken by the WA State Executive of the AusAPT WA Branch, this blog may well become a newsletter/blog for the branch.
What is the AusAPT?
The Australian Association for Psychological Type.
Members of AusAPT are people who work with psychological models based on the work of Carl G Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist who was a contemporary of Sigmund Freud.
Jung and Freud were the big two in the development of psychotherapy and Jung also wrote a book called Psychological Types which forms the basis of many modern psychological type theories.
The best known models are the MBTI® (Myers Briggs) and the MajorsPTI™.

An ever changing world

Good morning.
This is my second type related blog and I have started it because I am about to use an instrument that is not the MBTI®.
It is other.
This could be confusing, could be stressful, or exciting and it is, for me.
This has as much to do with my type - Extraverted, iNtuitive, Feeling, Perceiver ENFP - as it does to do with the fact that, well, I can't remember which fact, but I'm sure there's a fact in there somewhere.
